My career has included teaching as a law school professor, service with the U.S. Senate, management roles in humanitarian non-profits, and private law practice. Before my current position with Lewis and Clark Law School, I taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor at University of Maryland School of Law, as a professor of practice teaching national security legislation and legal professionalism with the Washington and Lee University School of Law and legal writing with the American University Washington College of Law. My writing includes academic law journal articles, congressional reports, and essays in prominent online publications. Much of this writing addressed issues of human rights, humanitarian law and policy, and national security. I served in lead roles in U.S. Senate investigations as Counsel to the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. Over the past several years, I have done a great deal of volunteer work with immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in the United States and internationally.
