The Seattle Journal for Social Justice (SJSJ) is accepting submissions for presentation at our annual symposium and for publication in our symposium issue to follow.
On March 5, 2021 we will be hosting “Workers’ Rights in the Wake of a Global Pandemic” at Seattle University School of Law, located in Seattle, Washington. It is possible the symposium will be held entirely online. In the event we are able to host the symposium in person, we will accommodate online participation for those who are unable to travel to Seattle.
Even before COVID-19 exploded in the United States, the worklaw system here had already created levels of wealth and income inequality not seen since the great depression, systematically divesting Black, native, immigrant and other vulnerable communities of wealth and income. The COVID-19 pandemic has magnified these inequities and enhanced the need for a conversation to both expose the underlying structures and to offer paths forward to a healthier future. This symposium aims to create space for that conversation among academics, practitioners, and community advocates to analyze the ways in which the COVID-19 outbreak has impacted safeguards for workers.
We are considering submissions covering all areas of labor and employment law to guide this conversation. Topics could include, but are not limited to: the unemployment benefits system; workplace health and safety regulation, including the use of workplace monitors or committees; nuisance and other tort theories of liability for employers; minimum compensation standards, including hazard pay; and the use of mass protest and other concerted activity.
