CALL FOR PAPERS AND PROPOSALS
The New York University Annual Survey of American Law is honored to dedicate its 80th Volume to Jed S. Rakoff, U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York.
Topic:
Judge Rakoff’s career as a distinguished litigator, jurist, and legal academic has impacted countless areas of the law. As he nears 30 years on the bench at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the Judge continues to manage an expansive docket that includes cases at the cutting edge of American law. Over his prolific academic career, Judge Rakoff has co-authored five books and published over 180 articles.
In recognition of Judge Rakoff’s career as a scholar and public servant, this dedication issue will explore some of the many legal areas that the Judge has impacted. We are seeking paper proposals centered around criminal law, evidence (particularly the intersection of scientific evidence and the criminal process), complex/ aggregate litigation, judicial institution-building, and practice in the federal district courts generally. Papers selected will be published along with tributes to Judge Rakoff delivered by Judge Denise Cote, Judge Gerard Lynch, Matt Shahabian, and Professor Erin Murphy.
Submission of Papers and Proposals
All papers and proposals on this topic should be sent to law.annualsurvey@nyu.edu or submitted via Scholastica no later than April 21, 2023. We are accepting submissions on a rolling basis. Authors will be informed of their selection for publication within three weeks of submission. Authors have until July 21, 2023 to submit their papers and proposals.
Proposals should include a title, detailed abstract, curriculum vitae, and statement of how the paper will engage with the topic.

Founded in 1942, the New York University Annual Survey of American Law is a student-edited journal at New York University School of Law. Annual Survey is NYU’s second-oldest law journal and was originally compiled by NYU faculty members as a comprehensive annual reference guide to developments in American law. Now a quarterly publication, Annual Survey continues its original mission by exploring contemporary legal developments in the United States from a practice-oriented perspective.
