How does Google Scholar fit into your research workflow?

I've heard two broad patterns from scholars about how they use Google Scholar:

1. They start their search in Google Scholar, find relevant sources, then access the research via institutional databases

2. Scholars find initial sources via institutional databases and the library, then go to Google Scholar and search for easily-found related works

How do you integrate Google Scholar into your research workflow?

Do you follow one of the two models listed above, or something completely different?

I do both, depending on the research topic.  Starting with Scholar is especially useful for finding (but not accessing) non-US sources.  But for primary sources, especially in current issues of transnational law, google (without scholar) sometimes produces good results.
