The Syracuse Law Review is pleased to announce our 2023 Symposium on Education Access and Opportunity.
Education access has become a prominent legal issue in recent years. In two recent decisions which will greatly impact the field of higher education, the Supreme Court overturned race-based affirmative action policies and struck down the Biden administration’s student debt relief program. Controversies over academic freedom in public school curricula and the consequences of inequitable funding have renewed questions of students’ civil and constitutional rights—or the lack thereof. And the proliferation of online instruction accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic has created both opportunities and challenges for students and educators. These developments raise an urgent question: How do we promote education access within this new landscape?
Through this symposium, we seek to analyze the legal implications of this historic moment and to produce a document which may prospectively guide scholars, policymakers, educators, and other interested stakeholders. Authors exploring these and related issues (at all education levels) may submit a paper proposal and their CV to slrsubmissions@syr.edu. We welcome proposals ranging in length from a brief prospectus to a full draft. Selected proposals will be expanded into papers of about 7,000 words, with final manuscripts due in January 2024 for publication in Volume 74. We will accept proposals on a rolling basis through September 15, 2023. Early submissions are strongly encouraged.
Our symposium event is scheduled for Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Syracuse University College of Law. Limited travel stipends will be available; we will confirm details at a later date. For those who cannot travel to Syracuse, authors may still participate in hybrid-format panels via Zoom. Please indicate your availability to attend in your submission email.
