Southern University Law Review invites proposals for both presentations and articles for its Equal Protection Clause Symposium, which will take place in a hybrid format, both in person and virtually, on April 6, 2024.
For both presentations and articles, submit abstracts of not more than 300 words to Katherine Waitz, Symposium Chair, to katherine.waitz@sulc.edu by December 15th, 2023. Presentation proposals should outline the central issues the speaker intends to cover. Alternatively, submit completed articles as MSWord documents via Scholastica or directly to the Law Review at lawreview@sulc.edu by February 1st, 2024. If the author has received an offer to publish from another publication, the law review will be happy to expedite review.
Symposium Theme:
The Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment has been a cornerstone of American jurisprudence, guaranteeing that no state shall deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. With the recent Supreme Court decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, questions have arisen regarding the implication and understanding of the Equal Protection Clause and what it entails today.
We welcome proposals on a variety of topics involving contemporary issues of discrimination, racial justice, and equal protection, including but not limited to:
- Affirmative Action; including the Supreme Court's decision in Student for Fair Admissions v. Harvard College and its effect on diversity in higher education;
- The Equal Protection Clause's role in redistricting plans, including the Supreme Court's decision in Allen v. Milligan;
- Transgender rights; including the current circuit split involving transgender-inclusive bathroom access to students and gender-affirming healthcare coverage;
- Comparative analyses of equal protection jurisprudence in different countries.
