Law Review Symposium – Digital Age Dilemmas
The University of Louisville Law Review is pleased to invite article proposals for its annual Symposium, which will occur on March 1, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky. This Symposium is titled Digital Age Dilemmas and will highlight the rapid development and implementation of technology into our society, ultimately calling for a prompt legal response to emerging threats and capabilities. Key topics include artificial intelligence (AI), the metaverse, social media, cryptocurrency, and data privacy. Authors published in connection with this Symposium will be part of a Special Edition Issue for the Law Review. Issue 3 of Volume 63 will spotlight three student written notes discussing growing concerns with AI usage as it pertains to intellectual property law and personal privacy rights, in addition to the Symposium articles.
The Law Review will host selected authors to present their articles during an in-person, all-day Symposium open to the public on Saturday, March 1, 2025. Authors will be assigned to panels and given twenty minutes to present their articles, followed by a brief question and answer period.
Submissions on the following topics are encouraged: exploitive uses of AI; safe practices to protect personal data; name, image, and likeness development; functions of the metaverse; transactional uses of consumer data; AI usage in the practice of law or other professions; the prevalence and prevention of data leaks; issues surrounding children’s use or presence on social media; the creation and implementation of cryptocurrency; accessibility to new technologies in rural areas; weighing convenience versus chaos caused by technological development; AI’s potential to replace specific jobs; virtual access to the courts; how the legal profession can uniquely protect those exploited by AI or data consumption; or any other topic related to innovative technologies and the legal profession. The editors actively seek diverse, intersectional viewpoints and innovative scholarly approaches that address timely issues. Although the Symposium is not a historical or comparative project, the editors welcome articles with historical or comparative features.
The Call for Papers is open now and will close on October 11, 2024. Interested individuals should submit an abstract of roughly 500 words or a full article to the Senior Symposium Editor, Alli Florence, at agflor01@louisville.edu. The Law Review will choose submissions to present at the Symposium and subsequently publish. Authors who submit their work for review but are not selected for publication may be invited to serve as a speaker at the Symposium to present their research. Selected authors and speakers will be notified of their submission status by November 1, 2024. The editors and members will work with authors over the winter and spring of 2025 to prepare and edit the articles for publication. Finished articles by authors selected for publication, and no more than 10,000 words, will be due no later than January 1, 2025. This final draft submission will be followed by the Law Review’s internal editorial process and Symposium in March. All selected articles will be published in the University of Louisville Law Review’s third issue of Volume 63 in late spring of 2025.
